Even after ten years, it freaks Hiroki out to wake up and find those startlingly pretty eyes four inches away from his own.
"Don’t do that!" he growls, shocked awake. "I’ve told you a hundred times not to watch me when I sleep!"
Usually he’s silenced with a kiss long before he can finish his sentence, but this time Nowaki just continues to look at him like he’s searching for something, or asking. What is he looking for? And what if Hiroki doesn’t have the answer?
Hiroki wonders why the tenderness in Nowaki frightens him so much, but perhaps this is just it – fear of not living up to expectations, of not being enough.
Hiroki can’t tear his eyes away from the face that is still so beautiful to him. He used to be afraid they would eventually cease to see each other and just take the other for granted, but it has not happened and he has gradually stopped worrying about it. His heart still makes a ridiculous little skip whenever Nowaki enters the room or when his number appears on the phone display. Apparently there is no law of nature stating that you can't continue to be in love like this, day after day, year after year, undiminished.
With a smile that begins in his eyes, Nowaki whispers: ”Happy anniversary.”
It’s been ten years.
And Hiroki can’t even think of a reply. How did it happen? How has he deserved someone like Nowaki?
But of course there is a reply, a good one, the best of replies. So when Nowaki starts to say ”Hiro-san, I love – ”, it’s his turn to be silenced with a kiss before he can finish the sentence.
